We are living in a post-WIMP (Windows, Icons, Menus & Pointer) world. Indeed, more and more users access information, communicate and operate mobile information appliances foregoing the still common mouse and keyboard of yonder. However, no matter how powerful or elegant the new mobile devices are, it is the user interface that ultimately governs how successful new devices or systems will be. In this talk I will look at current multimedia systems and their applications to wearable computing, virtual environments and ubiquitous computing. Multimodal user interfaces currently engage people using images, video and sound but virtual environments not only involve interactive 3D graphics, but further need to take more advantage of our senses through spatial audio, haptics and many other novel and exciting communication modalities. This talk will explore key current research issues and future directions up to and before the prophesized singularity.

Joaquim Jorge is Full Professor of Computer Graphics and Multimedia at the Departamento de Engenharia Informática do Instituto Superior Técnico da Universidade de Lisboa in Lisbon, Portugal http://web.tecnico.ulisboa.pt/jorgej, and Scientific Coordinator of the Research Group on Visualization and Multimodal Interfaces of the Institute for Computer and Systems Engineering INESC-ID. Since 2007, he is Editor-in-Chief of the Computers & Graphics Journal (Elsevier). He served on other journals including ERCIM News, Computer Graphics Forum 2001-2007, International Journal of Virtual Reality 2007-2011, Journal of WSCG since 2007 and serves on the Committee on Publication Ethics since 2009. He was elected to the ACM Europe Council in 2015. He was Invited Speaker at many venues, including Visual Computing Trends Symposium in 2013, (Vienna), the Spring Conference on Computer Graphics (Smolnice, Slovakia 2015) and the Expressive Modeling talk at the Collège de France in Paris (2015). He is an IEEE Senior Member since 2001, and became ACM Senior Member in 2007. Dr. Jorge´s research areas include Visual Computing, Geometric Modeling, Visualization and Intelligent Multimodal Interfaces and Pattern Recognition. He has been working on Calligraphic Interfaces for Geometric Modeling and Collaborative Approaches to Design Review. He is (co-)author of two books, edited 14 others, and published over 40 peer-reviewed articles in international journals as well as 150+ conference papers. He is fluent in English, Portuguese, French and Spanish.

Harold Thimbleby is professor of computer science at Swansea University, Wales. His passion is designing dependable systems to accommodate human error, especially in healthcare. See CHI+MED: Multidisciplinary Computer-Human Interaction research for the design and safe use of interactive medical devices for a major project he’s on. See for some of his recent work in healthcare IT. Harold is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh, the Institute of Engineering Technology, the Learned Society of Wales, and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Harold wrote the book Press On, which won the American Publishers’ Association best book award in computer science. Harold is a visiting professor at UCL and at Middlesex University.
