Social network analysis and interactive device design analysis

All interactive systems respond to what users do by changing what they are doing Ñ though sometimes maybe not in the way you intended! What they were doing before and after any particular user action defines a network. These networks have many interesting properties, which can be readily related to social and other sorts of more familiar networks. For example, hubs are well-connected, and off is usually easy to get to from anywhere, so off is usually, but not always, a hub. It turns out that many interactive systems have quite quirky designs, and network analysis can pinpoint design problems. For example, anaesthetists often switch devices (ventilators etc) off-and-on-again to adjust patient parameters; it turns out that off is often the most between state and therefore usually the best route to get a device to do what you want. It would have been preferable, instead, to design systems so standby was the most between state, as that would allow anaesthetists to adjust some patient values without having to reset all of them, which is what off does. Such design problems may be critical in an operation. In short, this talk will discuss usability problems (particularly medical devices, where design really matters) from the perspective of network analysis..

11:15 - 12:00 Professor Tayeb Sadiki
MULTIPATH MODELING ERRORS USING GAUSSIAN MIXTURE NOISE AND BAYESIAN APPROACH FOR GNSS
10:15 - 11:00 Prof. Joaquim Jorge
The Future of Multimodal Interfaces

We are living in a post-WIMP (Windows, Icons, Menus & Pointer) world. Indeed, more and more users access information, communicate and operate mobile information appliances foregoing the still common mouse and keyboard of yonder. However, no matter how powerful or elegant the new mobile devices are, it is the user interface that ultimately governs how successful new devices or systems will be.  In this talk I will look at current multimedia systems and their applications to wearable computing, virtual environments and ubiquitous computing.  Multimodal user interfaces currently engage people using images, video and sound but virtual environments not only involve interactive 3D graphics, but further need to take more advantage of our senses through spatial audio, haptics and many other novel and exciting communication modalities. This talk will explore key current research issues and future directions up to and before the prophesized singularity.

09:30 - 10:15 Prof. Harold Thimbleby CEng FIET FRCPE FLSW HonFRSA HonFRCP
Let's Stop Killing People - Designing with Human Error

We often worry about pilot error, user error, and human error at the "sharp end" where the action is, but many problems are caused by design errors, which in turn are caused by human error amongst the designers and engineers and programmers who build the systems. This keynote gets the audience to experience some of critical errors for themselves, explores a range of techniques to increase resilience (better managing error), and finally shows how important it is to reflect on error culture in fields such as the healthcare industry.

  - Some links about Agadir for shopping and visiting:

Nowhere in Morocco does the Atlantic thrust as far inland as it does in Agadir. The rather open gulf thus created endows Agadir with one of the best climates visitors wish for. Temperatures range on average between 16 and 26 degrees Celsius throughout the entire year, with an average and not so variable sea water temperature of 18 degrees Celsius. Little wonder the iconic picture of Agadir is a gleeful walk by the ever sunny seashore. Agadir boasts also the largest market in Africa “Souq Alhad”, an endemic “shopping mall” hosting some six thousand shops and selling a myriad of items from argan oil and turtles to carpets and electronics. A healthy walk from the shore to the Souq is a good idea. Agadir is the seventh largest city in the country and by international standards it can be readily referred to as small. No matter where your hotel falls on the map, it is never a challenge to be on time for an activity on this or that side of town. Transport to and from Agadir is available and efficient. With its international airport, which in 2010 served approximately 1,627,485 passengers and the newly-built motorway extending to Tangier, Agadir is anything but isolated.
